At her State of the Union, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called Russia's invasion of Ukraine a war of "autocracy against democracy".

Von der Leyen's speech came at a time of enormous geopolitical and economic turmoil; with violent conflict in Ukraine, the worst drought in 500 years and a spiralling energy crisis.While the State of the Union predominantly addressed the current stages of the Ukraine conflict, Von der Leyen also had intriguing comments about warning signs that were ignored.

"We should have listened to the voices inside our Union – in Poland, in the Baltics, and all across Central and Eastern Europe.How the EU is pushing back against RussiaShe claimed Putin's financial sector was "on life support" and that almost 1000 companies had left Russia. She said car production had fallen by three-quarters compared to last year and the national airline Aeroflot was forced to ground planes because it did not have enough spare parts.
