They collaborated on a controversial sculpture for DesignTO. What they didn't expect was to face a lighting dilemma.
the wilder sibling to the more traditional Interior Design Show, has been showcasing work by artists-slash-designers across the country and beyond, whose work pushes the boundaries of — and blurs the lines between — the fields of art, design and craft. Not only does it expose new audiences to brave new creations,
For Blake and Tessier that’s exactly what this work is all about. Titled “External Influences,” in homage to the current events Blake listened to on news radioA feat of woven cotton and rattan, it was born in the summer of 2021, just as the last U.S. troops left Afghanistan, and then set aside. It was finished after Blake got the urge to pick it up again exactly a year to the day the pullout began — hence its name.
Suspended from a ceiling four-metres high, it looked both diaphanous and light, she says, but also dense, somehow, and “substantial.” At the time, Blake had been earning a living doing high-end custom wall finishes, but was feeling lost in her career. As if by fate, one of her clients asked if she could weave a simple tapestry. Blake’s grandmother had taught her to knit when she was young and, she figured, why not try. To Blake’s surprise, she enjoyed it.
“It was ruined,” she says. Since trying to fix the splotch would have made things worse, she decided to think on it for a while, and put it aside. By pure coincidence, she pulled it out again exactly a year later. Sometime over the next few weeks, she posted the picture that lured in Tessier, who says she was drawn to the piece “like a moth to the flame.”
