OPINION: It’s really hard yakka trying to get the best value and the optimal sound out of Focal’s Bathys Bluetooth cans and their complex compatibility matrix.
a pair of $1200 Bluetooth headphones hasn’t been easy. It’s been a lot of work, trying to figure out how to get the best value and the most optimal sound out of them.
I got the impression noise cancellation is not meant to be the best. It feels designed to help you listen, rather than to survive a flight. If, for instance, you want to signal to the world that you have magic ears, then the Bathys would be the way to go, no question. They’re made of metal and leather , and they definitely look impressive, all the more so when you activate the LEDs that light up the logo on the sides.
Then again, I got the impression the Bathys’ noise cancellation is not meant to be the best. It feels designed to help you listen to music, rather than to help you survive a long-haul flight or someone yabbering away in the work cubicle next to yours. The trouble is, not every device is capable of using the Bathys’ DAC , and even on phones we tested that were able to switch to the Bathys’ DAC, not every app on that phone would work with it.
