ANALYSIS: There's a game of political chicken playing out within the Republican Party, and it's pure chaos
On top of everything else, the election of the speaker performs an important procedural function.
At least five of McCarthy's colleagues had publicly vowed to oppose him before the vote, while several others decided to do so in private. But there were moments throughout the day when his mask appeared to slip and he sat with a stony face, presumably wondering how it all went so wrong.They have long sought to whittle away the power of party leaders to make it easier to wield factional influence and have courted the backing of the hard-right Freedom Caucus.
Appearing alongside Perry and Gaetz before the vote, Colorado's Lauren Boebert declared: "So now here we are, being sworn at instead of being sworn in. And we could have had this solved months ago." In nominating McCarthy in the second-round ballot, Ohio representative Jim Jordan implored his colleagues to focus on their differences with members across the aisle, rather than with each other."Maybe the right person for the job of speaker of the House isn't someone who wants it so bad," Gaetz told the chamber.
Trump has publicly backed McCarthy's bid for speaker, but so far it does not appear to have paid off, even among the former president's staunchest supporters.
