The web of surveillance operations tracking COVID in NSW | Kaubo

NSW’s COVID hunters have deployed a network of surveillance systems to track the spread of the virus through the community and to predict the inevitable next wave.of positive rapid antigen tests left some epidemiologists concerned health authorities would be flying blind, unable to foresee future waves of COVID-19.

Chant said the PCR data was particularly valuable for understanding the levels of infection among older age groups, who were more likely to get PCR tests even as younger age groups dropped off. It’s a scaled-back version of the sewerage surveillance deployed earlier in the pandemic, but Chant said the team only needed to monitor 30 catchment areas and determine the concentration of the gene fragments per 10,000 people in each catchment to keep abreast of any changes in the virus’ movements.Meanwhile, the COVID sick days taken by healthcare staff were the ideal proxy for the rest of the state’s population, Chant said.

Daily hospitalisation numbers and death notifications were a constant measure of peaks and troughs. The latest hospital data showed the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 dropped by 9.4 per cent. In the week ending October 8, 946 people were hospitalised compared with 1044 at the end of the previous week.

“We could see there was going to be a fairly clear winner in each wave,” Chant said. “We knew that BA1 was going to be superseded by BA.2, and BA.4 and BA.5,” she said.
