There’s a lot to be done before October 14 if the Yes campaign is to turn the predicted result around.

The push to give parliament powers to make laws about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and to count them in the national census won more than 90 per cent support from voters – Australia’s biggest ever endorsement of a referendum question.

The Yes vote is trailing in the polls because, for months, Labor and the Yes campaign have struggled to explain how the Voice would work, why it is the answer to entrenched Indigenous disadvantage and why it needs to be permanently enshrined in the Constitution. Activists have been pursuing Indigenous recognition in the Constitution for decades and the current debate’s roots run through– the sweeping statement issued after a constitutional convention in 2017.

Professor Megan Davis, a co-author of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, used this week’s launch to try to address the question of what the Voice will do. The Voice is about practical and specific improvements to quality of life, she said. Privately, Yes campaign strategists say that’s the point where they are hoping Australians will arrive at by the day of the referendum.
