Attracting doctors to regional Australia is a constant battle, but it is hoped a futuristic surgical robot at Ballarat Base Hospital will entice the nation's best surgeons to the city.

The robot has been used in almost 100 procedures in the seven months since, and surgeons say it has been a game-changer. "The robots are more common in the private sector and health economics plays into that," Ballarat's director of robotic surgery Carolyn Vasey said. For Ms Butcher, the robot offered more than world-class surgery in her hometown."It's being part of the future, seeing the changes and how surgery has come along and being involved in something new," she said.
