“This is where they start and, without this habitat or nursery, we wouldn’t have the marine biodiversity and richness we have,” said Brushett, the marine planning and engagement coordinator with the Ecology Action Centre, one of the partners assessing and monitoring the health eelgrass beds in the Gros Morne region over the next three years.
The connectivity of eelgrass root networks also helps mitigate erosion in coastal areas where they are found. She hopes the study being done now will help shed light on the situation by building on baseline data that has been collected by the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station in Norris Point. This has included using a remotely operated vehicle equipped with a camera that has been sent through some of the beds to identify species found there and help assess habitat health.
