The case made waves last year after the allegations became public, prompting concern in Australia over the way sexual assault allegations are handled at the highest level. In the lead up to the trial, Chief Justice Lucy McCallum said she would need to ask any jury empanelled “to search their souls and see if they can be impartial,” saying that anyone who attended the women’s march in protest or follow Brittany Higgins on Twitter would be likely to be excused as potential jury members.
The trial was delayed earlier this year after an “ill-advised” Logie Awards speech by media personality Lisa Wilkinson, with McCallum saying the recent media publicity had prejudged Lehrmann’s right to a fair trial.Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued an apology to Higgins and other victims of sexual harassment in Parliament House on February 8 but the prime minister’s office later clarified the comments were not a reflection on matters before the court.
