Those champing at the bit to pass through China’s newly reopened borders still have a few obstacles to negotiate.

Some trying to bash the door down face visa woes. For business travellers, China is not yet issuing multiple-visit visas or accepting the digital APEC business travel card, both of which were favoured by executives.

Although domestic travel kept Chinese airlines flying for the past three years, very few airports were open to international flights. Bowerman notes that before the pandemic Malaysia’s largest airline, AirAsia, flew to 26 Chinese cities. “It’s going to take a while to ramp back up.” Vietnam’s hotels also have to wait until the government begins issuing holiday visas to Chinese. “The government here is quite cautious – but it also keeps a close eye on Thailand that’s viewed as a competitor destination,” Hamilton says.

In 2019, Chinese visitors accounted for about 30 per cent of tourists to Phuket and represented more than 10 per cent of guests at The Slate. “It would be great to have a Chinese complement to the business. We would love to have the high-end, discerning element of that market – but do we definitely need it? No.”
