In her concession speech, Notley, widely acknowledged to be the party’s strongest asset, vowed to stay on as leader and sounded ready to raise hell from across the aisle
EDMONTON — It may not have looked like it, or felt like it, but there was victory in defeat for Alberta’s New Democrats on Tuesday night.
Does this mean that Alberta politics now suddenly for the first time in half a century have an official opposition that's worthwhile? The gap began to close, with the conservatives weighted down under a series of scandals that touched on the Kenney leadership campaign, a Calgary candidate whose business was raided by the RCMP a few days before the election, and renewed attention to a series of racist and homophobic remarks by candidates.
Kenney’s interview with Charles Adler, a conservative radio talk show host, during which Adler grilled him over LGBTQ rights and the UCP leader was strongly criticized for his responses, felt like a turning point within the New Democrat campaign. There was simultaneously shock and elation, said a source working within the campaign who spoke on background.
Over a beer in Canmore on the Friday before the vote, Notley acknowledged that the economic downturn helped quash people’s concerns over “lake of fire” moments that derailed conservatives in the 2012 campaign but that the two — a social conscience and economic growth — shouldn’t be in opposition. She said Albertans hired them four years ago in a tough time, and this time they’d been hired for another tough job: the official opposition.
