Novak Djokovic’s Australian winning streak was in jeopardy, but he rose to the occasion yet again to win his second Adelaide title and 92nd overall.
Trailing by a set, then match point down, Novak Djokovic somehow turned the tables on Seb Korda in a matter of minutes before triumphing 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in a riveting Adelaide International final lasting more than three hours.
Korda might need to get Roger Federer, infamously tortured by Djokovic comebacks in grand slam deciders, on the phone to figure out how to forget this one. On most occasions, Korda never would have got another look in, and he had to save a set point in a tense 12th game just to force a tiebreak. He stormed to 3-0 and 6-4 leads in the tiebreak but predictably nothing came easy as Djokovic brought up his second set point. But the languid American somehow rose again, a quality generally associated with the man on the other side of the net.
Another tiebreaker followed but this time the 35-year-old shot 6-1 ahead and levelled the match soon after. “I felt great, really great, and that’s good for Australian Open,” Medvedev said. “But feeling that great, I [still] lost. That’s a little bit the negative, so hopefully no Novak on my side of the draw in Australian Open.
