Boys have blitzed mathematics and science subjects in this year’s HSC, while girls led in history and languages.

Boys have blitzed mathematics and science subjects in this year’s Higher School Certificate, but girls were ahead in history, creative arts and languages.126 of the state’s most high-achieving students were recognised at a ceremony on Wednesday addressed by Premier Dominic Perrottet.

He also gave a special acknowledgement to students who had overcome the adversity of devastating flooding at the beginning of the year.“So it is inspiring to see your resilience and perseverance to be awarded the top result you’ve worked so hard for.” In Sydney’s west, Cerdon Catholic College Merrylands student Annalise Reynolds-Pace led the state in Italian continuers and extension.

Strathfield’s Meriden School claimed more first-in-course honours than any other school, with five students from the all-girls school topping the state across a diverse range of subjects - including science extension and music extension - while Baulkham Hills High took home four of the top awards. Barker College, Cranbrook, Loreto Kirribilli, Sydney Grammar and Secondary College of Languages claimed three first-in-course prizes each.

In more difficult English subjects, Chloe Hoang from Pymble Ladies’ College came first in English advanced, while Otylia Pilat from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College in Kensington secured the top spot in English extension 1.
