Before patting ourselves on the back for having the right to choose, we should examine abortion issues within Canada.
, anxiety, fear and anger increased proportionally throughout the country. The sentiment was understandably echoed on this side of the border too. A loud cry rang out, commensurate to the gut punch delivered by this gigantic step backwards for reproductive rights, which was spurred by an anti-abortion movement that deigns to call itself “pro-life.” However, the “at-least-we’re-not-the-States” attitude often blinds Canadians to our own widespread problems regarding abortion.
In Prince Edward Island, an overhaul of the entire access network occurred in 2016. Following a nearly-35-year ban—and decades of women having to go off-island to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia to access services—PEI residents could finally get abortions on the island at one hospital in Summerside and another in Charlottetown. This action was a result of a 2016 challenge brought by the, which was won surprisingly fast.
At the other end of the access spectrum is Quebec, which—with its 41 service points and a history of defying anti-abortion laws—is often seen as Canada’s gold standard. Most providers offer abortions at up to 14 weeks, with one providing surgical options at up to 23 weeks and six days. But deep layers of red tape and bureaucratic nightmares can still exist, something that was brought to light last summer.

New envoy ‘happy’ to see Taiwan in spotlight, Canada's new China approach in Indo-Pacific strategyTaiwan’s new representative says he is “happy” that Canada’s much-anticipated Indo-Pacific strategy highlighted Taiwan and charted a new path for Ottawa in its relationship with China. The Indo-Pacific strategy, which was released on Nov. 27, is billed as a generational shift in Canada’s engagement in the region, after years of rocky relations with China. The strategic document notes that Canada will continue its engagement with Taiwan on issues such as “trade, technology, health, democratic governance, and countering disinformation,” but will maintain its “One China” policy. Canada doesn’t have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. “Canada will oppose unilateral actions that threaten the status quo in the Taiwan Strait,” the strategy notes. “We are happy that Taiwan is mentioned directly,” said Harry Ho-jen Tseng, who began his post as special representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada in late August. “To be honest, there were some concerns, not from us only, but from our friends here in Canada, a lot from these think tank communities. They [were] worried that if there is an Indo-Pacific strategy without referring to Taiwan directly, that is a pretty clear indication that you don’t want to upset our neighbour—China,” he said. Tseng was most recently Taiwan’s deputy foreign affairs minister, and has held head of mission posts to the European Union and Belgium, Palau, and Ireland. He was also director general of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ North American division and has had two postings in the United States. Tseng holds a PhD in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly launched the Indo-Pacific strategy on Nov. 27.
