The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre was one of Raymond Moriyama’s early, major designs, completed in 1963, but it is a masterpiece and still in immaculate condition on Wynford Drive by the Don Valley Parkway.
This city has often fretted that there’s no Toronto style. That we don’t have a homegrown architecture or a unique look in the mishmash of our urban form. One building, the original Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, just might embody all that yearning, but it’s at risk of being largely destroyed.
The case for the building’s ability to serve other purposes has already been proven. In 2003, Moriyama & Teshima was hired to update it for the Islamic Noor Cultural Centre, which made it its home until 2021, when they sold the building. Though it’s next to one of the busiest highways in Canada, unlike the Aga Khan Museum sitting high on a hill on the other side of the DVP, the centre is nestled low and behind a line of trees, obscured but for brief views during winter. Similarly, trees along Wynford Drive hide it well, and the south and east sides border a residential building and hotel. You’ve got to go looking for the building to appreciate it, but it’s worth the effort.
