Locals in Cronulla are fighting for a long-promised “missing link” to extend a popular beachside walk. The government might deliver only part of it.
Alarmed residents in Sydney’s south fear the state government will scrap a long-promised extension of The Esplanade walking track around the Cronulla peninsula after marine rescue volunteers raised safety concerns.
The full loop would run from Salmon Haul Reserve, through Hungry Point Reserve, to Darook Park at Gunnamatta Bay. Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce, a Liberal, will move a mayoral minute on Monday night objecting to any plans to curtail the extension or shrink funding for the project. He said the former Coalition government had allocated funds for the full boardwalk extension, which the council would build and maintain. Work on the project was expected to start later this year.
Lands and Property Minister Steve Kamper said Marine Rescue NSW maintained its earlier concerns about the proposal, but supported public access to the reserve outside operational areas for safety reasons.Marine Rescue NSW was worried the proposed boardwalk running through the reserve could obstruct volunteers’ access to the water and their ability to conduct water safety duties.
