Killara High was the state’s best-performing comprehensive public school in this year’s HSC, leaping more than 120 places to 55th spot, making it the best result for the school in at least seven years

Robin Chand, who was appointed principal in 2021 after 15 years as a history and English teacher, said it was a major achievement for a school of about 1600 students. “We are a big public comprehensive, and we accept every student that walks through the gates, rather than entry according to ability.”

“The most important thing is that our teachers understand they are one of the key factors that influence student achievement,” he said.“We try to make sure we have the highest quality of teaching and learning, and results will look after themselves.” Killara had 14 all-rounder students, and nine top achievers, with the school’s success rate increasing from 10.53 per cent last year to 24 per cent in 2022.

“Our students excelled in ancient history and science, and we scored 10 percentage points above the state average in harder maths subjects,” said Chand. Killara had 14 all-rounders and nine top-achievers.
