Teachers have welcomed the changes to PDHPE so parents know it is not simply running around on the school oval.

The HSC subject PDHPE is set to be rebranded as “health and movement science” in a bid to better reflect the scientific concepts students will study under a new curriculum scheduled to roll out in two years’ time.

International Grammar School’s head of PDHPE, sport and outdoor education Simon Board, who was on the NSW Education Standards Authority committee steering the changes, said the changes were designed to empower students to explore how what they’d learnt applied in the real world. “The new health and movement science syllabus also provides students scope to look more globally at health- and movement-based concepts as they examine highly relevant world health issues,” Board said.Other topics covered in the new curriculum include the interrelationships between anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology, nutrition, skill acquisition, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

His classmate Finley Batchelar received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Southern Carolina next year after a couple of years of gruelling training. He enjoyed the PDHPE course despite the fact some of the questions in the exam, including one on aerobic and anaerobic exercise, had proved tricky.

Her classmate Ruby Vernon, 17, will play first-grade soccer for Manly United from next year and liked the exam because there were plenty of questions she could relate to. “There were even some schools who weren’t offering it because they didn’t think it was academically rigorous, but then people realised it was.”
