The Philippines ramps up efforts to boost IPv6 adoption amid low national uptake

The Philippines has been at the forefront of IPv6 research since the late 1990s, spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute . As the successor to IPv4, IPv6 offers a virtually unlimited number of IP addresses, addressing the limitations of IPv4, which could only accommodate 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 enables seamless connectivity for the growing number of devices worldwide, ensuring efficient internet traffic and scalability.

Neighboring countries such as India and Vietnam have achieved significantly higher adoption rates, highlighting the need for greater collaboration among government agencies, academia, internet service providers , and other stakeholders.To accelerate IPv6 adoption, DOST-ASTI has launched initiatives such as the Open Network Testbed Laboratory for Internet Technologies Deployment and Experimentation Project, funded by the APNIC Foundation through the ISIF Asia program.
