In a social media post the acclaimed performer asked “why the Ian Potter Foundation feels the need to put his name on a theatre that belongs to all of us”.
Actor and musician Eddie Perfect has spoken out against the renaming of Melbourne’s State Theatre to the Ian Potter State Theatre, saying it should not be named after one individual as it belongs to all Victorians.that the theatre will be renamed the Ian Potter State Theatre to mark the Ian Potter Foundation’s donation of $15 million to its refurbishment.
Chris King, director of Art’s Centre Melbourne’s Reimagining Project, has said that the donation was agreed in 2020. According to Perfect, the renaming was due to be announced in 2022. Perfect, who was performing at the State Theatre in Dolly Parton musical 9 to 5, was asked to host the announcement.

The Ian and Primrose Potter Foyer is within the same building as the State Theatre.
“I’m not an idealist who would look a gift horse in the mouth,” says Perfect. “I know philanthropy is really important to the arts and these conversations are hard. But is it a good deal for the state of Victoria? What does it mean, what we call our buildings in 2024, and how do people feel about it?”
