Walter “Wally” Firth, the first Indigenous MP from the North, died on March 2 in Victoria, B.C., aged 89. Born in Fort McPherson, Firth identified as Métis of Scottish and Gwich’in heritage. Pre-politics, he worked at the Hudson’s Bay, the NWT Housing Corporation, and as an announcer/operator at the CBC’s then-new station CHAK in Inuvik, according to biographical documents from his former Hill staffer Jacqulyn McIntyre.
