Meet the tour operators who are hand-building kayaks from a rare Tasmanian timber for paddling on Dove Lake.
Help keep family & friends informed by sharing this articleAdventure tour operators Anthony O'Hern and Anna Paice never intended to become boat builders.
He remembers when Ms Paice had the idea to make the kayaks from King Billy pine — a rare Tasmanian timber that grows on the shores of Dove Lake.Saying no to plastic "[And] we thought some big, bright, plastic [kayaks] would detract from other people's experience [of the lake]." "There's not much of it left [and] you're not allowed to cut it down any more — it's highly protected."Mr O'Hern explained they sourced the King Billy timber from a family-owned sawmill on Tasmania's west coast.
Following online and written instructions, Mr O'Hern painstakingly pieced together his first kayak — a double — for two people to paddle.
