He remembers when Ms Paice had the idea to make the kayaks from King Billy pine — a rare Tasmanian timber that grows on the shores of Dove Lake.Saying no to plastic "[And] we thought some big, bright, plastic [kayaks] would detract from other people's experience [of the lake]." "There's not much of it left [and] you're not allowed to cut it down any more — it's highly protected."Mr O'Hern explained they sourced the King Billy timber from a family-owned sawmill on Tasmania's west coast.

Following online and written instructions, Mr O'Hern painstakingly pieced together his first kayak — a double — for two people to paddle.
