The Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner says he’s open to spot duty as a defenceman

Mitch Marner’s first reaction to his potential new role as a situational defenceman? “I’m open to kind of whatever,” the Maple Leafs winger said Friday.

“I’m open to kind of whatever,” the“Obviously, it’s a little different playing defence on power plays than at even strength. But sometimes you get those opportunities, late on shifts or late on power plays, where you’re a forward who has to play on defence. I’m open to all opportunities and whatever thinking.”

Marner’s defensive game has risen to the point where he has been in the voting for the Selke Trophy the past four seasons. He posted a career-best plus-23 last season. “He looks the part out there, I think the idea is offensive-zone stuff, and obviously he’s a good skater and a smart hockey player out there,” Matthews said. “You trust him to make the right reads, so it’s a matter of getting him some reps, but he’s definitely a guy who’s geared to that job.”
