In order not to sink due to relations with China, ASEAN must not ignore the development of its industrialization with non-Chinese parties. ASEAN is very important politically in the region and has a central role.
This conclusion is based on the longstanding fact that the United States and the European Union are Japan's most important partners. Another reason is that Japan is a source of capital goods for ASEAN, but ASEAN has difficulty penetrating the Japanese market for finished products, semi-finished production, maritime products and agricultural sectors.However, even though ASEAN-China relations are booming, basically these relations are uneven.
Tomoo Marukawa also reminds us that the ASEAN-China economic relationship not only overwhelms the economic relationship between ASEAN and countries outside of ASEAN. He observes that even the intra-ASEAN economic integration is drowning amid the rapid growth of ASEAN's trade with China. Trade integration within ASEAN remains stagnant.Despite its shortcomings, ASEAN-China has established important economic relations.
Does ASEAN want to continue with market-based industrialization and China's aggressive efforts alone? Or should ASEAN consider the identity of its industry and aim for greater competitiveness?
