The Great Circle doesn't reinvent the wheel but it offers a cohesive set of creative gameplay decisions, and nails the Indiana Jones charm, mystery, and flavor. And that's well-deserved. You can feel the passion that the developers at MachineGames had in truly capturing Indiana Jones in video game form — a feat that you can argue hasn't truly ever been done this way.
\ There are previous Indiana Jones games, like the 1999 effort for the N64, but looking at YouTube gameplay footage and commentary, the game leaned a little too close to being a Tomb Raider clone during those days when Lara was the industry’s superstar — which is, of course, ironic given that Tomb Raider was inspired by Indiana Jones. The 1992 game is beloved by many Indy fans for nailing the series’ hallmarks — a great mystery, booby traps, mysterious artifacts with possibly world-changing powers, the instantly recognizable music, the cheeky humor, and that Harrison Ford charm. And all that despite being a 2D game. \The Great Circle was the closest thing that a video game has captured an Indy adventure — at least until now. \An aside: one of the frown-inducing parts of The Great Circle is that it requires at least an NVIDIA RTX 2060, so if you haven’t updated your GPU lately, you’re out of luck. The game certainly doesn’t disappoint in the visuals department though; sometimes you will find yourself in a room or in a cavernous tomb where you just marvel at the art direction and the lighting. And discovering these sites is really a big part of the experience. \I tested The Great Circle with an RTX 4080 GPU that handled the demanding game beautifully. I ran it at 1440p at ultra settings, and got around the 90 to 100 frames-per-second. I could crank it up to 4K and still get more than 60 fps, but I liked the faster frame rates at 1440p. The Great Circle does for this generation what the 1992 game did more than 3 decades ago, it delivers the mystery, the intrigue, and of course, the whip-cracking (which, by the way, is so satisfying to hear)
