ANALYSIS: The four charts that defined WA in 2022, and what they mean for the year ahead
Despite that, the state has been left with just one public PCR testing clinic, with the government instead asking people to use RATs to check if they're infected., with details still to be announced by the government., but is yet to be activated.For independent economist Conrad Liveris, the chart that summed up the year showed the number of unemployed people in WA – that is, how many people are looking for work but do not have a job.
"And now in hindsight, maybe it went on a bit too long, so we've just created so many jobs and there just aren't enough people."While Mr Liveris described that as a "good problem to have", because it meant more people were employed, it wasn't without its downsides. Those challenges are expected to persist into 2023, with Mr Liveris predicting unemployment to rise slightly, but not significantly over the coming 12 months.Senior economist at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, Cassandra Winzar, also identified skills shortages as a significant issue across the year.
"During the last mining boom, the percentage of temporary skilled migrants got to over three per cent of the WA labour force and that really cushioned WA from some of those skill shortages. "But I think what's really interesting is that it hasn't come back, so we've opened up the borders, we've seen a little bit of an increase in migrants but not very significantly.
