Doug Ford’s Toronto obsession is helping shape the byelection, with mayoral candidates staking out positions on how they would cope with the premier.
When pleas to Queen’s Park failed, Tory and other officials went door to door in Toronto’s Progressive Conservative ridingsso the funding had to be restored. It worked.
Toronto’s stature as a mere “creature of the province,” despite having a budget and international profile bigger than that of several provinces, is clearer than ever thanks to the Ford government’sNo premier has so readily and overtly used that power while professing insights into the inner workings and chronic shortcomings of a city hall that he roiled, with his late mayoral brother Rob, during the chaotic 2010 to 2014 council term.
“This notion that you can just fight all the time is just not on because you will literally get nothing done and you’ll get no funding for anything,” said one, describing a pivot between partnership and public protest on vital issues. Until Toronto gets a share of sales or income taxes to sustainably fund itself, the new mayor shouldn’t simply cave to Queen’s Park when it takes actions like Bill 23 that reduces or freezes fees that cities charge developers, the official said.
