‘Double digit move’ for long term interest rates in USCommSec’s Tom Piotrowski says for the second night in a row in the United States there has been a “double-digit move higher” for long-term interest rates. “What we have tended to see globally is bank stocks have been the beneficiaries of that,” he told Sky News Australia. “We’ve also seen commodities move higher because the US dollar has weakened a little bit, and that’s been supportive as far as commodities which could put our market in a better stead today.” Presented by CommSec.

Avatar sequel’s opening weekend earnings ’disappointed expectations’Walt Disney shares hit their lowest level this year after the opening weekend earnings for the new Avatar film “disappointed expectations”, according to CommSec’s Tom Piotrowski. Mr Piotrowski said Avatar: The Way of Water generated $US134 million in its opening weekend in North America, however analysts were expecting figures “significantly higher” at around $US175 million. “There are comparisons being made to the first Avatar film in 2009 which actually went on to become the highest-grossing film,” he told Sky News Australia. “It had $US77 million in its opening weekend so that’s an interesting comparison.” Presented by CommSec.
