In retirement, former rugby league player Merv Cross became a trailblazing knee doctor.
Mervyn John Cross was born in Warialda, NSW on July 3, 1941 to Don and Mollie Cross. His mother managed the pub in town whilst the “men” were overseas for World War II.After his younger brother John was born, the family moved to Sydney in 1947 when the men returned from the war to take over the running of the pub. He was educated at Marcellin College, Randwick, where he was taken under the wing of the headmaster who saw something good in the young boy from the bush.
He became a first grade forward for Souths, then Easts and Norths before obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1970 and subspecialising in orthopaedic surgery.Cross had a vision to take knee surgery and management beyond the simple. He went to the United States to complete a fellowship year at the Hughston Clinic in Colombus, Georgia.
Cross had public hospital appointments first at Royal North Shore and then at Sydney Hospital, where he was an Honorary surgeon, but he did most of his operating at the Mater Hospital at Crows Nest. Cross had an incredible ability to make any of these people feel comfortable in his presence. He never had any airs and graces in dealing with patients, their families, or the many and varied staff with which he came into contact.
