Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist and Sidney Crosby assisted on Jake Guentzel’s overtime game winner Monday as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated back into a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
As the Penguins look to hold on to their playoff spot with the away and home series against the frustratingly inconsistent Ottawa Senators Wednesday and Friday, keep this in mind: Pittsburgh hasn’t skipped the NHL’s post-season party since Malkin arrived in 2006-07. Crosby’s only miss came in his rookie season of 2005-06. In the COVID-19 2019-20 season, the Penguins lost a qualifying round before the round of 16.
Crosby, drafted first overall in 2005, has played 1,150 regular season games, with 538 goals and 920 assists. He has twice won the Hart Trophy as most valuable player, the Art Ross as scoring champion and the Rocket Richard title as goal scoring leader. Come playoff time, he has 71 goals and 131 assists in 180 games and has twice captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as the top playoff performer.
Stutzle has 19 goals and 21 assists in 39 games and has all the makings of becoming a long-time NHL star, but he’s still prone to the inconsistences and defensive lapses of a player with only 171 games to his name. In terms of two forwards sticking together, the Chicago Blackhawks tandem of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane offers a similar comparison to Crosby and Malkin, but Chicago has missed the playoffs four of the past five seasons. Kane and/or Toews could also be dealt before the trade deadline.
