David Bergmar of Protecht Group loves the game for its social dimensions, but an encounter with a ricocheting golf ball proved bloody.
avid Bergmark is the co-founder and chief executive of Protecht Group, a risk management software and services company. He lives in Sydney.Growing up, my father often brought me along to his games. It wasn’t until I was 12 and we moved to New York that I started caddying and playing at Scarsdale Country Club. However, my mother preferred me to take up weekly trombone lessons as a hobby. It came to a head one day when I just hopped on my bike and skipped my lesson to ride to the golf course.
David Bergmark, CEO and co-founder of Protecht Group with golfing buddies at Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland.I’m a member at The Grand on the Gold Coast, with a membership application in for Concord Sydney. My handicap has been a solid climb upwards – from a low of three when I was in my late teens to a high of 14 and currently settling around 12.
I also had a period where I kept skulling chips . Some of the guys I was playing with started getting worried it was contagious. Earlier this year, I bought an artificial turf mat and converted my lounge room into a chipping area. Every day for six months, I spent close to an hour chipping around the lounge. I’m pleased to say that I’ve made progress on my chipping. Persistence, right? My friends and I call it the risk-based “tree root rule” to protect our ageing hands and wrists.
I’ve been lucky enough to play at some beautiful golf courses around the world. This year, we went to Scotland for the Open. It was an amazing experience following Cam Smith on the last few holes at St Andrews, particularly the 17th as he smashed his drive over the hotel. We also went to. I used to watch him play the Masters every year when I was younger and marvel at his short-game prowess.
Being an outdoor sport is maybe one of the best and worst things. Poor course and weather conditions are out of your control. The people you meet along the way. There is a great social aspect to the sport. I’d also like to think my risk lens from my day job supports my approach to golf; every course has its own nuances you need to adjust and cater for. It’s an incredibly tough game, which is why it is so rewarding.
