On March 11, the House of Commons Public Safety and National Security Committee held a special meeting to discuss a Conservative motion seeking “to immediately undertake a study” on how and why murderer Luka Magnotta was transferred from a maximum- to a medium-security prison in 2022, with a heavy emphasis on Magnotta being transferred to the same facility that now houses serial killer Paul Bernardo.
There was a great hue and cry from some about needing to know “how” Magnotta's transfer happened so covertly, the “incompetence” of those involved in the process, and how to ensure it doesn’t happen again—all leaning in the direction of the public safety minister having the ability to direct Correctional Service Canada on the treatment of dangerous offenders.
