Every January, we mourn human losses due to the way we celebrate the New Year . This year's casualties are 39 percent higher than last year's, and counting. It's inexplicable why we continue this revelry instead of adopting a safer celebration. Thousands have had their lives ruined by firecrackers. For those with minor injuries, it's a valuable lesson. For amputees, it's a life-altering struggle. And for those who died, they become statistics.
Four deaths have already been reported this year, one involving a 44-year-old who looked into an unexploded firecracker. We sympathize with his family, but it's a tragic reminder of the risks. Most victims are minors. This madness continues, partly because firecrackers are deeply ingrained in Filipino New Year traditions, making government efforts to change the culture of celebration difficult. There were some years when the government strictly enforced the firecracker ban, resulting in fewer casualties
