Canberrans are sometimes accused of being out of touch and different from other Australians — and this socio-economic data shows they are.
This isn't the same as being rich or poor — socio-economic advantage is a measure of "people's access to material and social resources, and their ability to participate in society".
Only one in seven Canberrans live in an area with an advantage score below the national halfway point. It's associated with health outcomes, career prospects, how well your children do at school and even happiness.Yet they are imperfect — and can even be deceptive. While the many small areas that make up Canberra tend to be advantaged, "it doesn't mean there are no individuals in poverty", he says."But because there aren't many areas of concentrated disadvantage, those individuals can risk becoming invisible in statistics like SEIFA."One is Canberra's workforce, which has a very high share of university-educated employees. Canberra isn't quite so different from other cities if you only look at wealth.
The demolition of public housing towers in recent years has made disadvantage less statistically visible in Canberra.
