It has been one year since Gillon McLachlan indicated he was stepping down as chief executive. Furious club officials say the process to replace him is farcical.

When a few hundred of the AFL’s stakeholders were invited to Penfolds’ Magill Estate in Adelaide earlier this month, they were not expecting a comedy routine. The AFL had asked the group to the picturesque winery to mark the opening of the game’s Gather Round, a week-long festival of football in South Australia.

Goyder described Malinauskas as “tall and good-looking”, adding that he had also played football at an Adelaide private school – just like the game’s outgoing chief executive, Gillon McLachlan, who sat nearby. “Peter, come speak to me about a job we’re looking to fill afterwards,” Goyder said, according to three people at the dinner.

Chief among them were the game’s shareholders – the clubs – and five of the candidates who have been formally interviewed for the top job. “It was a total embarrassment,” one club chief executive told. A club president said: “They have done a terrific job … but the CEO saga is tarnishing the goodwill there is out there towards Gill and Richard.”

Goyder has tried to smooth over the situation, telling irritated executives in phone calls and in person that the long search for McLachlan’s replacement would be over within weeks. One source at AFL House defended Goyder, who they said just wants to make sure the decision is the correct one. She has reportedly been backed by Goyder. One club president said Watson-Wheeler getting the job would be “a huge shock” considering the experience of the other candidates. But others were not surprised the AFL would be considering naming an accomplished woman for the role.Vogue Australia
