Josh Matlow and Mark Saunders expressed starkly different views on whether bike lanes help or hurt traffic congestion.

“I think bike lanes are a good thing and I think they’re a healthy thing. I’m against how it’s being done, how it’s affecting businesses, how it’s affecting the congestion.”

Council also endorsed a city staff plan to add 100 kilometres of new cycling routes by 2024, a move then-mayor John Tory called “the right and responsible thing to do and it will help more people get around our city safely by bike.” “When we drive our cars in traffic, the reality is we are part of traffic. So drivers win when other drivers have more options to get around other than being part of the traffic that we are frustrated by,” Matlow said.

Matlow added: “That’s just reality. That’s just honest,” and said he is focusing on plans to improve people’s lives rather than create an “us against them dynamic.”
