“Clearing out a homeless encampment goes pretty directly against what our aims are,” he said. “We want to ensure people have safe and secure places to live. This is the closest thing to safety and security a lot of people have, and the province is moving to clear it out.” Pater said the fact the shelters are inaccessible 12 hours of the day means unhoused residents will be left to “wander in the wind in the coldest months of winter.”
However, it's not known how many of those staying at the encampment were actually notified of the plans to vacate. During a visit to the encampment on Dec. 12, one resident said they had no idea they would need to leave, while another said they had only heard rumours they would be pushed out.A volunteer who often visits the encampment, who asked to remain anonymous, said they haven’t seen or heard of anyone from the province visiting the site or informing residents of the plans.
That leaves the volunteer concerned about what actions the province may take to have them removed, they said. Both the volunteer and Pater were unaware of how the province intends to remove the residents from the encampment, what would happen to those who choose to stay or when the plan will take effect.
