ICYMI - Terry Glavin: Xi Jinping takes Justin Trudeau down a peg
It’s not some long-overdue penny-dropping after years of naiveté. All the talk from Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland about “friend-shoring” and from François-Philippe Champagne about “decoupling” critical supply chains with Chinese links in them, and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s promises that honest, that new China policy we’ve been promising for years is finally in the hopper — it all comes down to a very simple and sobering fact.
Even before Biden appointed him ambassador to Canada last December, David Cohen made it clear that the White House was growing impatient with Canada’s dithering over its long-awaited new approach to Beijing. “We are all waiting for Canada to release its framework for its overall China policy,” Cohen told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September last year, and now the Americans’ patience has run out.
The Americans had been warning Canada to steer clear of Huawei for 10 years before Canada finally caught up with the rest of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership with the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand and barred Huawei from Canada’s core 5G architecture, only a few months ago.
