Brittany Higgins has denied removing text messages and images from her phone to conceal them from police, saying she was “terrified” after then home affairs minister Peter Dutton said he had the initial details of her complaint before she’d made a recorded statement to police.

Higgins agreed that she declined to hand over her phone following an appointment with police on February 24. The court heard they made numerous other requests and that Higgins did not attend multiple appointments. “This goes to the heart of why I was concerned about handing my phone to police – that week I found there’s a provision that any politically sensitive matters that are within the remit of police get reported to the home affairs minister.
