Ginevra Servant was walking along the pathway between SEAPARC Rec Centre and Journey Middle School on her way to school when she heard a sound in the bushes.

A 12-year-old girl had a close encounter with a cougar Friday morning while on her walk to school in Sooke.

“I pulled my phone out of my pocket to check the time, and when I looked back up, there was a cougar seven feet away from me, just like walking towards me.”“I thought I was going to die because a cougar was making a weird sound and coming towards me,” she said.Servant told CHEK News she knew running away would make the situation worse, so she stood her ground and started calling her family and friends to tell them what was happening.

Once the cougar was gone, Servant said she ran up to Journey Middle School, later going to a friend’s house to calm down from the encounter. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has not received a report in relation to this incident, but recognizes cougar activity can cause concern to area residents. It advises anyone who encounters a cougar to stay calm, make yourself look as large as possible and keep the cougar in front of you at all times.

If it attacks, authorities say to fight back using anything you can as a weapon, while focusing your attack on the cougar’s face and eyes.
