Telus Storyhive gives platform to Black filmmakers in Alberta, B.C. yyc

The two filmmakers created the shorts Sweeter Blue and Scammed, respectively, as the Calgary representatives of the Black Creators edition of TELUS STORYHIVE. Sweeter Blue, which is just over 15 minutes, is a two-character study about a couple who can’t find closure after a breakup. It is a simple premise and a revisiting of themes and characters from an earlier short she made called Not That Deep. It has only two performers — actors and dancers Cindy Ansah and Jared Herring — and one set.

“I am very angry about the fact that we can’t do anything when someone gets scammed,” Thomas says. “So, it’s from the perspective that she is angry. She reported it. We are told to report crimes. But then there is nothing they can do to help us. So it’s kind of revenge against the system.”Article content

The two films were among 12 made in Alberta and British Columbia that are currently on view on Youtube and Telus Optik TV as part of the program. They premiered in February as part of Black Excellence on Screen, which was presented by STORYHIVE and the Black Screen Office.Article content Sweeter Blue is a contemporary tale made with a small crew in an apartment in Calgary’s Beltline. It was actually shorter than Not That Deep, with Maseka wanting to make it even more concise than its predecessor. It is a “break-up” film, she says, and one that she purposely made “mundane” in zeroing in on a couple “avoiding the closure conversation and eventually sort of having it.
