Musical twins mix fiction and autobiography in Junior High.
“It hasn’t been, ‘Oh God, we gotta go back and be traumatized.’ For us, there is a lot of really positive stuff that comes out of it,” Tegan added during a recent video chat.
“We chose Tillie Walden because she is this incredible, iconic comic book artist and is queer and a twin,” said Tegan.Tegan and Sara are seen here on the red carpet for a screening of the Freevee TV series High School in Calgary in September 2022. The series is based on the pair’s 2019 memoir of the same name.
“I also think, for Sara and I, we didn’t want to write a book that had a lot of trauma or triggering things in it. Sara has been using this word ‘inspirational’. We wanted to write about what it would be like to be uncomfortable and a little awkward about your sexuality but not have any stigma or homophobia. What would it be like to come out and have your parents be like I love you no matter what because I do think that more and more that is a common thing.
Tegan and Sara are kicking off a book tour for Junior High here in Vancouver on June 4 at 7 p.m. at West Point Grey United Church Sanctuary. The event, presented by Kidsbooks, will include a conversation with Shannon Ozirny, head of youth services at West Vancouver Memorial Library, and a Q&A with the audience.
