A group of teens are believed to have started a fire at Piper’s Lagoon in Nanaimo on Friday night after they set off fireworks at the seaside park.

“We were on scene quickly and there was a fire,” he said, adding that it was located on a rocky outcropping at the base of the lagoon.“When we got on scene there were reports of teenagers that were lighting off fireworks in the area and that is the most likely cause of the fire,” he told CHEK News Saturday.Kenning says it took some time getting water on the fire, since the outcropping was down a relatively long park trail.

“Crews were on scene until about 5 a.m. ensuring that there was no other extension to the rest of the park,” said Kenning. “The park is one of the crown jewels of the Nanaimo parks and we didn’t want it to spread to the rest of it.”In a statement Saturday, the BC Coastal Fire Centre said things like campfires and fireworks can cause embers to be carried kilometres away if wind conditions are right.Sign up for the CHEK Now daily email newsletter to get breaking news and the day's top stories sent to your email.“With the hot dry weather we’re always at a certain level of concern with the fire ban,” Kenning said.
