School drops need for families to sign permission form for kids to attend Pride event amid parent concerns that it implies there is some kind of risk.
Parents of students at Bruce Public School in Leslieville received an email last Friday and a paper form on Monday indicating that their approval was necessary for an upcoming “excursion”: an afternoon of storytelling in the school gym by Toronto drag queenExcursion forms are usually reserved for field trips offproperty. While the school’s planned Pride day events include a march around the block and a flag ceremony, permission was sought specifically for the drag queen storytime.
However, following Toronto Star inquiries to the principal, superintendent Belinda Longe and the TDSB, the school board acknowledged Wednesday that the “initial direction suggested permission forms,” but that “we are no longer using that approach.” Lauren Keegan, queer parent to two children at Bruce, was confused by the original request for permission, noting the school regularly hosts equity and diversity celebrations for Black and Indigenous history, for example, that don’t require consent. “I could not understand why Pride was being singled out.”
