The song is widely believed to be about the singer-songwriter’s relationship with musicianSwift and Mayer reportedly dated between December 2009 and February 2010, when he was 31 years old and she was 19.
In video of her introducing the song, Swift can be heard telling fans: “I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19... I’m not putting this album out so you can go on the internet and defend me against someone you think I wrote a song about 14 million years ago.” In “Dear John”, Swift sings: “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress, cried the whole way home, I should’ve known.”
