Derelict shopfronts are blighting parts of Sydney, including Norton Street in Leichhardt and Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, prompting calls for a new “vacancy tax”.

A bid to reverse the decline of suburban high streets by punishing landlords who leave their shops vacant has been backed by some business groups, but shunned by both sides of state politics.

Byrne cited a “prime example” of four neighbouring lots on the strip, opposite the pub, which have sat vacant for years. They are owned by a company that is associated with a Sydney café chain. The owner, who thehas opted not to name, received approval for a three-level mixed-use redevelopment over the four lots last year. They then tried to add a fourth floor, which a local planning panel rejected in May. The “superb” DA-approved site is now up for sale.

However, some business lobby groups endorsed the idea. Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou said people want their high streets to thrive, and “incentivising landlords with tax breaks would help greatly”.The statewide group, Business NSW, declined to comment.Leichhardt Annandale Business Chamber president Mark Chapman said any scheme to encourage landlords to occupy their tenancies over a long period of time was welcome.
