A volunteer fire brigade in Tasmania's north-west is rallying around a local family of eight who lost their home in a fire on Christmas Day.

Dallas Whelan, whose daughter's house it was, said he was having a rest when his wife woke him and told him about the smoke."I went down with that hose, started to spray water behind the door, until I had a couple of explosions above my head," he said.Grandfather Dallas Whelan tried to put the fire out with a hose.
"It could have been a lot worse and we are so thankful the family and pets are safe," Ms Wealands said.The damage bill is estimated at about $300,000.Locals have been donating essential items for the family that lost everything in the fire.
