“Because of the hardships, it left us with no choice but to sell our small business and leave our beautiful homeland and roots for broader opportunities.”They are the words of newcomers to Canada, collected by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, a national historic site at the Halifax seaport where nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada from 1928 to 1971.

And while immigration retention comes with its own complexities, the fundamental challenge is one that all Atlantic Canadians can recognize: creating a future where our children find opportunity and can afford to live and work here for the long term.First, we must address our housing shortage. And to do so we ought to learn the lesson from the crises in Canada’s largest cities.

As I reflect on my journey from Syria to the welcoming shores of Nova Scotia, I am left feeling grateful but determined. While Atlantic Canada has enjoyed a surge in population growth, the increase has simultaneously exposed significant challenges that, if left unaddressed, could hinder our future prosperity.
