Local manager and customers say 'yes'

Donna Adams, a cashier who has worked for 17 years at Sobeys Sydney River, gets a customer's order together while simultaneous chatting with her. "It's what we do," Adams said.

“Within the Cape Breton market, we have a diversified clientele, young and old,” Gilbert said. “Sometimes you’re caught in a conundrum. You do have some people who want to go in and out as fast as they can. And some of Sobeys’ stores also have automatic registers to help get them through as quickly.

Outside the Sydney River store packing groceries into his vehicle, customer Michael MacLennan said he previously lived in Alberta for 35 years and would notice a “big difference” in customer-cashier interactions when he would come home during the summer. The Cape Breton Post reached out Prince Street store manager Kevin Rogers for his thoughts on the idea, but he offered no comment and instead referred the Post to Sobeys’ media contact line. Phone and email messages were left at Sobeys’ media lines but no one responded by publication time Tuesday afternoon.
