In their return from an extended Christmas break, the Senators went the distance — and then some — before putting the finishing touches on the 3\u002D2 shootout victory.
Drake Batherson and Alex DeBrincat scored in the penalty shot competition against Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Fittingly, though, Talbot was perfect in the shootout to finally lead the Senators to victory. It looked like the Senators might hang on to win in regulation, but Pavel Zacha finally broke through against Talbot, tying the game 2-2 with 3:33 left in the third period.
After a second period that featured some sweet passing by the Senators, along with some crazy bounces and a disallowed Bruins goal, the Senators took a 2-1 lead into the third. Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman makes a save on a shot from the Ottawa Senators’ Tim Stutzle in the first period at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Bruins thought they had opened the scoring at the 2:25 mark of the second, but an apparent Patrice Bergeron goal was waved off after video review determined the play was offside.

While the Senators took care of business in their 7-5 home opener victory over the Bruins, that was a rarity for the Bruins. Boston has been a model for the rest of the NHL to follow this season, coming into the contest with a league-leading 27-4-2 record, including a 7-1-2 mark in their previous 10 games.
